work test and work test exemption

The Government has recently passed new regulations allowing eligible recent retirees with modest super balances, to make voluntary superannuation contributions for 12 months from the end of the financial year in which they last met the work test.

The ‘work test’ and ‘work text exemption’ are tests that you must meet before you’re eligible to make or receive voluntary super contributions after age 65.

To meet or use the work test exemption, individuals must satisfy the following conditions: – members haven’t been, and don’t intend to be, gainfully employed for at least 40 hours within
30 consecutive days in the financial year the contributions are made. – member’s total superannuation balance with all super providers was below $300,000 at 30 June of the
previous financial year. – member hasn’t previously made contributions to super using the work test exemption.
Declaration for work test or work test exemption

Individuals wanting to make voluntary contributions will need to make a declaration to their super fund confirming they meet the government’s work test or work test exemption requirements.

Additional considerations
 The work test exemption can only be used in relation to one financial year.
 Existing contributions caps (for 2019-20, $25,000 concessional and $100,000
non-concessional) will continue to apply.
 If eligible, individuals will be able to utilise any carry forward of unused concessional
contributions and bring forward arrangements for non-concessional contributions.
