Super is an investment vehicle, not an asset class

Home > Financial Focus

When share markets become volatile and unpredictable, investors can be particularly concerned that superannuation may no longer be their best option and stop or reduce their voluntary contributions into super.

It is important to remember that a super fund is an investment vehicle, not an asset class. Regardless of whether you invest through a super fund or outside of super, it’s what you invest in (cash, shares, property etc) which determines whether your money goes up or down.

Investing for retirement through a super fund can be a highly effective way to invest because of the significant tax benefits. Earnings in superannuation are taxed at a maximum of 15% rather than at your marginal rate (which can be as high as 47%).
